The Impact of Violence on Women by Sarah Abdallah

“There is a great streak of violence in every human being. If it is not channeled and understood, it will break out in war or in madness.” Sam Peckinpah. The world celebrates stop the violence day on November 22nd of each year, as a reminder for all the people that lost their lives for being violated, or lost themselves due to violence taking over them.

Violence lives in each one of us, the only difference is that some people know how to control it, while others open a door for it and allow the cruelty to hunt them down. Violence affects the person being violated, the family having a violent being and society in general. It is the behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something, therefore, women can be easily dead in between the hands of the ruthless men. The impact of violence on women can be low self-worth, mental problems, copying the violent behavior and most importantly death or injury. On society, the cycle of violence can continue into new generations, women will still continue to think the men are better than them and abusing women will be normal in few years.

In my opinion, the abuser is also impacted by violence. A man can’t just become violent. Its causes are complex and occur at different levels. The first level is the biological and personal factors like education, genetics and experiencing violent behavior. The second level is the relationships, being lonely or thinking of previous relations. The third is the community context like neighborhood, school or workplace. This may be affected by the absence of social networks, and poverty. Lastly, societal factors that help to create a climate in which violence is encouraged or inhibited: social and cultural norms regarding gender roles or parent-child relationships, income inequality, the social acceptability of violence, the availability of weapons, and political instability. So, the abuser went through a lot before becoming violent. Yes, violence isn’t accepted especially towards women but the abuser had a really rough life that should be taken into consideration.

Violence causes more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide every year and one in four women in the U.S. estimated to become victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Brutality can never be stopped, but it can be prevented by teaching children from a young age that violence is wrong, when the child grows he knows that violence isn’t an answer to treat issues and problems. Also teach parents and some schools that a child can’t be treated using violence, they can use alternatives to punish the kid. In some states guns are accepted to be held at a house and this should be illegal, for some people can use it for other reasons than safety. Lastly, in my opinion there should be a place to treat violent people and try making the abuser believe that the traumatic experiences he passed through had already happened and no one should be chastised for his past.
